Working on a stock 1973 Vega, which has an in tank fuel pump. It stopped working after the car sat up for a while, so I boiled the tank out, and installed a new fuel pump and filter. Blew out the gas line from two directions with 175 psi, got good flow of air and no trash. When you turn the key you can hear the fuel pump buzzing but I did not get any fuel to the carb. I disconnected the fuel line right where it came out of the tank and it pumped fuel fine. I blew out the fuel line between the gas tank and the carb a second time, and still no gas at the carb. That would lead you to believe there was something in the line. I got a brand new gas line, blew it out, and connected it up and the same thing happend. The fuel pump would pump gas at the connection just past the gas tank but would not pump gas up to the carb. Also the fuel pump starts out with a normal hum and then gets louder the longer you leave the key turned on. Plenty of gas in the tank. Doesn't make sense. Any ideas??
Just to see what would happen, I connected a Holley external fuel pump up, and it pulled gas right thru the in tank pump and up to the carb and the car started up. I pressure tested the pump before I installed it and it was fine. When I connected it to the gas lines on the car it leaked gas near the bottom of the pump. This does not make sense either.
The Holley pump makes a lot more noise and is only 5 inches away from an exhaust pipe going into the muffler so I really don't want to use this as a permanant solution if I dont have to, even if I fix the unexplained leak.
I have removed the tank and the fuel pump and have re-examined everything and can not find any problems, dirt or anything wrong at all, so I am comletely stumped as to why the stock in tank pump will pump gas right outside the tank but will not pump gas up to the carb. The tank is sitting on my work bench until I can figure this out. Any ideas appreciated.
