Ive been searching and googling and not able to come up with solid answers for my 454. Its out of an 86 RV, and the owner said his Dad bought it new. As far as he can remember the engine was never swapped out but the casting number (10069286) comes up for a 90-91? Im fairly knowledgeable with the small blocks chevys, but this is my first 454 and i really get confused with all the misinformation i get. Everybody i know runs small blocks, and the guys that have big blocks just keep telling me i need to get a loan and stroke it. Im on a VERY tight budget and just want this engine to run. I would really like to see if i can get some help with some of the questions i need answered, so here goes...
1. What would the CCA of my battery need to be? Around 1000 or better?
2. What is the operating fuel pressure/flow rate? 8-10psi? 10-12? I have a modified Holley 600 double pumper on it, should i jet it to the max and put larger squirters on?
3. Is there a way to find out what the compression ratio is without cc'ing the heads?
4. Should i expect the same oil pressure as a small block, or will it be higher?
5. How can i tell if its internally balanced or external?
6. What is the max crankshaft endplay? .007-.010?
7. What will be the easiest way to measure the cam without pulling it? Indicator on the rocker tip?
Thats a good start for now,but ill have more im sure. Sorry if these are stupid questions but i havent been able to find the answers.
One thing to note, the odometer on the rv said 58,243 miles. So far the only thing i found in need of replacing is the harmonic balancer. I think the previous owner told me the last time they ran it was the trip to the Daytona 500 feb 2001.
