My nephew was given a 1978 Ford F-150 4x4 with a 400 engine.
We know this engine came with dirt low compression ratio and retarded camshaft timing. We did a mechanical oil pressure check and found it to be good, so were sure the bottom end is in okay shape.
So we ordered a Weiand Action Plus dual plane intake.
Summit racing 1 5/8 headers with 3 inch collectors. Dual exhaust, Turbo mufflers.
Comp Cams Magnum double roller timing set.
Carter Muscle Car mechanical fuel pump.
Summit racing hydraulic flat tappet camshaft with identical specs
as the Edelbrock Performer Camshaft.
.204 In .214 Ex Duration @.050
.487 In .512 Lift. LSA: 112
Snatched a Holley 750 Vacuum Secondary off the shelf we had laying around.
Complete tune up with MSD Streetfire spiral core plug wires.
I'm a Chevy guy, never been one to work on Fords much so I'm asking is what's the best performance timing curve for this engine?
Chevy's like vacuum advance at idle, I dunno if Fords do or not.
Also, what total timing spec should I shoot for and at what RPM?
Appreciate any help you can give.
My nephew will start driving next year and knowing the Ford 400 has a long
4 inch stroke I focused on improving the engines low end torque for better pulling power and improved fuel exconomy.
Again, Appreciate any help on the timing specs.
