Hi everyone, I've noticed in the last couple of weeks an issue with the 250 engine in my 68 Camaro. After you start it, it will heat up to 210-215 degrees before the thermostat opens. Then it will drop back down to 190. I don't know why it heats up so much before opening. I just installed a new 180 thermostat.
I'm having other issues with this engine as well and they are all coolant related. The engine was rebuilt back in the winter. Shortly after I started noticing water trails down the side of the block, mostly on the drivers side. It looks to be leaking coolant between the head. I pulled the head and the gasket wasn't blown, but appeared not to be sealing. I installed another gasket, put sealer on the bolt threads, and torqued in proper sequence and increments. I'm thinking either the head needs milled or the block needs decked. It's weird that I never had this problem until I rebuilt it.
Last but not least, when I was driving it today, it did heat up to 200-210 degrees and pretty much stayed there. I'm assuming that also has to do with the leak.
Thanks everyone for their time,
