sbc clearance

does anyone know if there is a general rule of thumb as to how much valve lift stock early smogger chevy heads will handle SAFELY before retainer to stem seal clearance becomes an issue?

im trying to get an idea if i can safely run 1.6 rockers or not..coil bind issues being ignored for now. Im running .442/.465 lift with 1.5 which would mean .472 / .496 lift @ 1.6:1

Im pretty certain valve to piston clearance wont be an issue but that is a little bit easier to check.

If i wanted to measure how much lift i could run, is it as simple as using this test spring, with a dial indicator and open the valve until the retainer contacts the seal??

also, just roughly....I know my block is a 1970 2bolt mains chevy 350 for a monte carlo (looked the numbers up once) what would be a reasonable assumption for piston to deck height..just so I can toss some numbers around in some calculators? I have speedpro flat-top pistons in there
