Timing a 4.3 chevy V6

I've got a 1994 chevy 4.3 V6 that I changed to a carburator and an HEI distributor. I've read a bunch of threads on how to time it, but I still have some questions. There are 2 marks on the crank pulley, and I've read that you should line it up with The second line on The timing mark as you turn the engine clock wise. However, I feel compression as the first line passes the timing mark and not the second. What am I doing wrong? Also where should the No 1 wire be on the distributor? Thanks, Tom
