Engine swap

Hi all, I'm am new to this forum, as well as new to cars. I have an AMC 1965 Rambler American. 220 base model with the original flathead straight six in it. As you can imagine, it doesn't have very much horsepower to begin with and adding it's age to that, it's grown quite tired. And I'd really like to sea something that's a bit more powerful. I've done a small amount about swapping in a 302 ford v8 engine and transmission in (oil pan design goes along with the oil design of the flathead? Opposed to a chevy) with this swap, I would have to replace the current rear end. I have learned that an 8 inch rear end from a beginning to mid 70s maverick or find a mustang 2 and gut it out for the engine, drivetrain, and rear end, which would pretty much bolt right in. I'd like to know what I need to do with this engine swap, what I need to consider regarding these choices, and the cross members as well as engine mounts, and if I should favor these two choices? Please let me know what you did, and what kind of modifications need to be done to make this all come together and work. I'm eager to learn about what needs to be done! Thanks!
