Valve springs : setting for years

I was talking to a friend who has a custom /restoration shop about my engine issues in my coupe. sbc, is it possible if an engine sits for a long time say 7 or 8 years after it was newly built, before i started it that the valve springs could have weaken. Its been so long since i had it built now that i can't remember what size cam and spring rates was installed. I think the cam was a Competition cam 455 or 500lift, 234 duration at 50. using 186 casting dubble hump heads, 202/160 valves, springs and guide plates. He thinks the springs may have weakened and they are not snapping back the valves quick enough which is causing the fuel to load up and not run smooth at low speeds. just put a new edlebrock 500 carb in place of the 650 holley which runs better at higher rpm. phil
